Improving Your French for Work: Where to Start

Business French has its own codes. Here is how to gain confidence for your meetings, emails and interviews.

Improving Your French for Work: Where to Start

Professional French is not a different French

It is the same French, with specific codes: a more formal register, expected phrases and industry vocabulary. The good news: you do not need a perfect level to be effective at work. You need the right French, in the right place.

Master the key situations first

Rather than learning "all of business vocabulary", target the moments that really matter in your job:

  • Introducing yourself and your company in one minute.
  • Taking part in a meeting: giving your opinion, qualifying it, asking for clarification.
  • Writing a clear, polite email.
  • Handling a call or video meeting without panicking.
  • Working on these concrete situations beats word lists.

    The email phrases to know

French professional emails follow precise conventions. A few well-placed phrases make all the difference: "Je me permets de vous contacter", "Pourriez-vous me confirmer...", "Dans l'attente de votre retour", "Bien cordialement". Memorise a handful and reuse them.

    The right level of politeness

The main difficulty is not grammar, it is register. "Tu" versus "vous", a direct or softened tone, hedging ("il faudrait peut-être..."): these nuances matter a great deal in a professional context. This is where a teacher who knows the working world is invaluable.

    Prepare your interviews and presentations

For an interview or an important presentation, prepare and rehearse out loud. Anticipate the classic questions, build your answers, practise with someone who corrects you. Fluency on the big day is prepared in advance, it is not improvised.

    Fast, targeted progress

Professional French is one of the areas where you improve fastest, because the needs are specific. A few lessons centred on your real situations — your actual emails, your actual meetings — will make you operational far faster than a generic course.
