The right mindset to start

Starting from scratch is not a handicap, it is a blank page. You have no bad habits to fix. The classic beginner mistake is not a lack of talent: it is trying to learn everything at once. The key is to build solid foundations, in the right order, without drowning.

Step 1: sounds before rules

French is rarely written the way it is pronounced. Start with your ear: listen and repeat simple words before diving into grammar. The nasal sounds, the French "r", the "u": these are what make a beginner understandable, long before perfect conjugation.

Step 2: 100 words that actually matter

You do not need 5,000 words to communicate. Around a hundred very frequent words cover most everyday situations: greeting, ordering, asking for directions, talking about yourself. Focus on these useful words rather than rare vocabulary.

Step 3: ready-made sentences

At first, learn full sentences rather than isolated words. "Je voudrais un café", "Comment ça va ?", "Je ne comprends pas". These ready-to-use blocks get you speaking in the first week and build your confidence.

Step 4: speak fast, speak wrong

The biggest brake for beginners is the fear of making mistakes. But you learn a language by practising it, not by waiting until you feel ready. Accept making errors: every corrected mistake is a step forward. A beginner who dares to speak improves twice as fast.

Do you need a teacher from the start?

Apps are great for self-discipline and vocabulary. But they do not correct your pronunciation or answer your questions. A few lessons with a teacher from the start prevent bad habits and hugely speed up the first weeks.

Your first 30-day plan

Aim for 15 minutes a day: 5 minutes of listening, 5 minutes of vocabulary, 5 minutes speaking out loud. Add one lesson a week to get corrected. In a month, you will hold a first simple conversation — and that first click is what makes you want to continue.
