TCF or DELF: which French test should you choose based on your goal
Immigration, studies, citizenship: the two certifications serve different purposes — here's how to choose.
Two tests, two different logics
DELF, DALF, TCF: these acronyms come up everywhere as soon as French certification is mentioned, and it's easy to get lost. The choice between DELF and TCF depends almost entirely on your administrative goal, not on your language level. Here's how to choose without getting it wrong.
DELF and DALF: diplomas for life
The DELF (levels A1 to B2) and the DALF (levels C1-C2) are issued by the French Ministry of National Education. Their key feature: they never expire. An excellent choice if you want lasting proof of your level, for a study application or an application that isn't time-sensitive. You register directly at the level you're targeting and must pass it as a whole.
TCF: a flexible test, but with an expiration date
The TCF assesses your actual level across the entire CEFR scale in a single session, with a score that then corresponds to a level. Unlike the DELF, the result has a limited validity period: it's a tool designed for one-off administrative procedures rather than a permanent diploma. Several versions exist depending on the intended use (studies, naturalization, Canada...).
For immigration to Canada
For economic immigration to Canada (Express Entry or a provincial program), the TCF Canada is generally the test to prioritize, as it's recognized by Canadian authorities. The TEF Canada is an equally recognized alternative. Always check the exact requirements of the program you're targeting on official websites, as criteria change over time.
For studies in France or naturalization
For admission to French higher education, the DELF B2 is often the reference required. Some universities also accept the TCF: check the requirements of the institution you're targeting. For naturalization, a B1 level in speaking is generally required, with several certifications accepted depending on current criteria. Since rules change, checking the official website remains essential before choosing.

Whatever test you're aiming for, the best preparation is still to work on all four skills with exercises in the exact format of the exam. Speaking is hard to improve on your own: you need someone to simulate the test and correct your speech under real conditions.
